David Mendel

A New Vision of Quebec City

Description

Architectural historian, expert guide and well-known speaker, David Mendel has organized tours of Quebec City, over the last 25 years, for a prestigious international clientele. These visitors, from all backgrounds, have often suggested that he create a book-souvenir which would allow them to relive and share their fascinating discovery of the city.

In collaboration with photographer Luc-Antoine Couturier, David Mendel is presenting today the first in a series of four guides which will be of great interest for visitors and for the residents of Quebec City. This publication offers historic information based on in-depth research and superb photographs in a practical, compact format.

After a captivating introduction to Quebec’s history, the Mendel Guide presents the most important monuments, symbols and institutions of Quebec’s Old City. Richly illustrated with both historic and contemporary images, the book offers a privileged access to rarely visited interiors , and provides spectacular views of the city, many taken from angles which have never been seen before. A visual feast, the Mendel guide offers a renewed vision of Old Quebec and will quickly become a reference on the subject.

In his guide, David Mendel offers an absorbing historical account, and fascinating anecdotes. His texts are written in a clear accessible language, leaving ample space for the illustrations. Each chapter opens with a large never-published-before photograph, followed by informative texts and exclusive images to reveal the past and present of each site and explore specific themes.

The Mendel guide is in both its approach and content. Each location is explored in detail, as if on a guided tour, as the reader discovers the exterior of the site – and its relation to the city – followed by the interior to discover architectural elements, symbols and objects. Overall the book offers a wonderful account of the cultural influences – French, English and American, which have marked the evolution of the city since 1608.

The Mendel guide Quebec, World Heritage City is co-edited by Les Éditions Sylvain Harvey and the Commission de la capitale nationale du Québec. Published in English and in French, this inspiring witness to 400 years of Québec’s history, will answer a need expressed by both visitors and residents.
